It's all built into the ecosystem, and to top it off, they have to be profitable. They have to pay employee taxes, liability if you're on-site, limited benefits, payroll isn't free, and they need to pay recruiters to find jobs, maintain relationships with both you and the client. If they're getting paid $100/hr by their client for your head, and they're paying you $40-50/hr for graphic design, that's not a bad deal. Have you every setup a corporation, paid a payroll company, W-2'd yourself and paid employee taxes? I have, and that's shit's brutal as fuck.

It's my understanding that if you haven't done work for one of their client's in 12 months, they lose your exclusivity to that client, so maybe that's an option for you. Now that you know fully how it works (this was all explained to me up front), you can either choose to work with CC or not. And you likely wouldn't have made the connection to this client yourself.

But when clients don't know how to go about getting talent, they rely on recruiters like Creative Circle as a resource.

All business have markup on services they can retain wholesale and resell, which is essentially what they're doing with talent that is looking for work.ĭo you make less than if you had made the connection yourself? Of course.

They've put the candidate through the interview process, background checks, software screenings. They've determined the needs of their clients, and they've recruited creative talent to fill those needs. They've built the relationships and trust. There's really nothing "shady" about this. You made a working relationship through a placement agency and you're surprised that they a) retain your exclusive rights for making the connection to THEIR (not your.) client, and b) make money on top of you? I understand something like 30% max, but you're charging them $150 and paying me less than $50? C'mon. I casually asked CC circle to raise my rate for the project (without mentioning I'd spoken with the client, since I was chummy with the company) and they said "Oh, the clients budget just doesn't have wiggle room, but we'll see what we can do!"īro. They were more than happy to pay my rate, which was actually lower than what CC was charging them. I took on the lowball project because I really wanted to help this company out that seemed to just not have the budget. I had the client feel awful that I wasn't getting properly compensated. They often make fake job/project posts to beef up their marketing list and make them look more reputable. They actually have a clause that says I have to pay them commission for clients I get on my own. You still are seen as their employee even when you get 0 hours which makes it hard to do other work with agencies or clients. Oh, I certainly enjoyed the benefits of this, and I got paid every Friday, but here's where my problems start: Is there something that can be done to stop this shady scheme? They're just as toxic as sites like Fiverr and Elance to the industry. I wish I could figure out how to boycott the company. Take my advice: Don't work with Creative Circle. Which is crazy that a company would do that, makes me wanna cry out of thankfulness. We're gonna have to work with them until the client has the extra funds to buy out my contract. Thankfully my clients are passionate about this. Who the hell is going to pay $55k JUST to hire you? It really sucks man. The way they write those is specifically designed to keep an airtight seal on you, make you look like an employee of the company, for which the client has to pay 25-50% of your salary if they want you. She tried to look through any loophole or exception and she couldn't. They got someone from their legal team to speak to Creative Circle about working directly with them. My contact decided to make sure this type of deal was okay to make outside of Creative Circle after we both gawked at what my hourly rate was (10% less than what the client was paying and 60% more than I was receiving) and gawked a little more when we both realized how much I was getting paid versus how much they were paying. I've had a good long working relationship with my clients and they contacted me in person to hire me for a massive project they have in the pipeline. I understand 10,20, hell, even a 30% cut, but over 50% for work you don't even do? I on the other hand have had success landing a few projects with them, at the expense of having my rate be cut in half without even the clients knowledge. So I'm sure you've heard of Creative Circle and generally most people aren't successful in getting work from them after being spammed with it left and right.
